Dr. Taro Shirakawa
Profile
Dr.Taro Shirakawa got MD at Kyoto University Medical School in 1983, and PhD in Medicine at Osaka University in 1994. After he worked as chest physician, he recognized how preventive medicine is important, and decided to move to public health field, and got position at Osaka University Medical School. Since he was interested in asthma, he tried to establish preventive strategy for allergic disorders. For this reason, he applied to join the research group at University of Oxford directed by Drs. Julian Hopkin and WOCM Cookson who lead the genetics of asthma in the world. Since then, he stayed in UK for nearly 10 years at University of Oxford and Wales, got an international fame on genetics of asthma after he identified important genes responsible for the development of it. In 2000, he was invited to become a Prof. at his mother university, and in 2001, he was assigned Prof. at the National Human Genome Centre at RIKEN. Furthermore, he started clinical groups for cancer patients at the terminal stage, and established remarkable achievement in this field. For these achievements, he got several outstanding awards both in and out of Japan.
